Wes Crump - Drafted with the 1st pick of the 7th round, #13 overall by The Hunt Clubtriskaidekaphobia [tris-kahy-dek-uh-foh-bee-uh, tris-kuh-]: the fear or phobia of the number 13.
For most people the number thirteen invokes thoughts of bad luck and superstitions. Conventional wisdom says that you should avoid the number thirteen at every avenue.
In sports, where superstitions often-times rule over logic, the number is avoided like the plague. Formula-1 racing has banned the number from their race cars. Even top stars who chose to wear the #13 have experienced some luck gone afoul that many associated with their uniform numbers. Dan Marino (Miami Dolphins #13) is widely considered the greatest QB to never win a Super Bowl. Alex Rodriguez switched from #3 to #13 when traded to the N.Y. Yankees and after switching to the pinstripes and adding the 1 in front of the 3, A-Rod and the Yanks have failed to capture the World Series title. Mats Sundin (#13 Toronto Maple Leafs) is the NHL's all-time points leader among players without a Stanley Cup title.
For The Hunt Club, captain Wayne Hunt says that the #13 is just another number. "A lot of people would have shied away from picking a King Invitational rookie with the thirteenth pick. But, I looked at "Uncle" Wes and decided that with two players left to go, I'd jump at a chance to grab someone who I think will be a calming influence on our squad," Hunt told TGA staff reporters.
Technically, Crump, the newest TGA member, is the uncle of fellow TGA member, Lane "Turtle" Moore. But, his calm demeanor, corny jokes and stature as one of the TGA Tour's elder statesmen has not only made him a tour favorite but has garnered him the nickname "Uncle Wes".
"A guy that comes in, unknown by nearly everyone in the league, and suddenly has the majority of his fellow competitors calling him 'Uncle'... that's a guy I want on my team," said Hunt. "I think Uncle Wes will be someone that guys look up to and will be a good fit for a lot of our guys on the days we play captains choice and two-man best ball. I've got some volatile guys on my squad, myself included. A personality like his should help keep the outbursts to a minimum."
