Jay Whitt - Drafted with the 2nd pick of the 7th Round, #14 overall by The King's Court
Traditionally, the last player in the NFL's Amateur Player Draft is affectionately called Mr. Irrelevant. But, to make Mr. Irrelevant, well um...relevant again, there is a whole Irrelevant Week dedicated to him, culminating in an awards ceremony and luncheon where Mr. Irrelevant is feted with gifts and accolades. The final player selected for the 2009 King Invitational, Jay Whitt won't be subject to that type of individual scrutiny according to team captain, Jackie King.
"It's not like the NFL where 250+ players are chosen. We consider Jay to be one of the sixteen best amateur golfers in the Triad. Otherwise, he wouldn't be a part of this event," King said.
Whitt, who has been sidelined for nearly two years while undergoing treatment for a series of kidney stones, will make his return to golf at the 2009 K.I. "Obviously, Jay's health was of concern to everyone and a big reason he didn't go higher in the draft. We had him in for workouts in December and our medical staff came back with positive news," King said in announcing his final pick at a news conference earlier today.
"Jay's a people person. All of the guys on the King's Court will appreciate what he brings to the team in terms of chemistry. He has a way of easing tensions in the locker room."
2009 will mark Whitt's third appearance at the King Invitational.
