Ted Prestwood (2) and Ryan Mayo (6) vs. Chris Morris (3) and Phillip Brookshire (7)
The second match-up on Day 1 of the 2009 King Invitational pits two long-time nemeses each paired with a relative TGA newcomer in what has match-of-the-day potential. Thomasville's Ted Prestwood, one of the all-time points leaders on the TGA Tour, teams up with Charlotte's Ryan Mayo to challenge Big Daddy Classic Hall-of-Famer Chris Morris and K.I. rookie, Phillip "The Kid" Brookshire.
Prestwood and Mayo enter the fracas as The King's Court's #2 and #6 seeds, respectively. Prestwood is the lone senior representing TKC and his strong short game should benefit from the presence of Mayo and his ability to hit the long ball.
Their opponents include Morris, seeded #3 for The Hunt Club, and Brookshire, a #7 seed making his invitational debut. This match-up features two of the longest hitters on THC and each player is expected to feed off each other's drive in this Superball format.
Captain's take on pick:
Jackie King: I believe this is potentially the day's best match. Ted's ability to consistently find the fairway, combined with the luxury of hitting from the senior tees, should provide Mayo a great opportunity to just bomb away. Plus, Ted's recent history against Chris in singles play should add confidence to our team.
Wayne Hunt: These guys have the ability to considerably reduce the course's length. I have confidence that they will consistently put themselves in good enough position off the tee to set up plenty of scoring opportunities. Chris has proven that he's not easily rattled and I expect him to hold his own and I think Phillip will be one of the true surprises in this entire event.
